Time to rise, shine and enjoy this delicious breakfast or brunch treat! The idea for this caramel apple French toast came from a recipe I had for a casserole version of the same. I thought it might taste even better made in the traditional way, with the caramel syrup poured on top. I thought right! I've obviously tried both and this version wins hands down. My husband agrees.
You really can't lose with this one. Plus, you can enjoy the flavor of a caramel apple without the fear of breaking your teeth. I dare say this caramel apple French toast is even better than a caramel apple!
🥄 Equipment
Our recommended equipment for this recipe is listed below (affiliate links). To prepare the egg mixture, you can use either a blender (recommended) or a glass bowl with an electric mixer. In addition, you can use either a griddle or a non-stick skillet.
- Griddle
- Blender
- Electric mixer
- Medium glass bowl
- Medium non-stick skillet
- Small baking dish
- Medium saucepan
🧾 Ingredients

French bread works great for this recipe. After purchase, you will want to let it sit for at least a day. Stale bread works best. If the bread is too fresh, it will soak up too much of the egg mixture and become soggy.
I used agave syrup because that is what I had on hand and have heard about its health benefits, but as with many things that is debatable. You can also use light corn syrup. It doesn't take much - only two tablespoons. You just want to make sure you use a syrup that does not add flavor.

📋 Step-By-Step Instructions for French Toast (With Photos)
Step 1. Add egg, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon and nutmeg to a blender and blend for about 1 minute or until mixture is frothy. Alternatively, you can add ingredients to a medium bowl and beat with an electric mixer. We recommend the blender method because it's less messy.
Pour mixture into a shallow baking dish and set aside.

Step 2. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a griddle or medium skillet set to medium heat. Then, dip both sides of each slice of bread into egg mixture.

Step 3. Place bread on griddle and cook for about 5 minutes.
While bread is cooking, sprinkle one tablespoon of brown sugar on each slice of bread.
Step 4. Add an apple ring to each slice of bread. Press apple ring into the bread with spatula.

Step 5. Turn bread and cook on the other side for about 5 minutes or until well-browned and brown sugar is melted.
Occasionally, gently press down on each slice of bread with spatula to help sugar reach the hot surface of the griddle. This will help caramelize the sugar.
Remove the French toast to a plate, tent with aluminum foil to keep warm, and set aside. Repeat steps 1-5 with two remaining slices of bread.

📓 Instructions for Caramel Syrup
Step 1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar, and agave syrup. Stir constantly until boiling. Lower heat and continue cooking and stirring until thickened, about 3-5 minutes. Be careful to not overcook. It can burn easily.

Step 2. Carefully pour the syrup into a glass carafe with a pour spout. Serve while hot. The caramel sets fast so you want to work quickly.
Divide French toast among individual plates. Sprinkle with pecans and pour hot caramel syrup over the top.
