Nutella is a very good thing. Is that even worth mentioning? This decadent chocolate hazelnut spread has taken the country by storm. However, as I mentioned in my mascarpone and nutella crepes post, there was a time when Nutella wasn’t well-known in the United States. That’s hard to imagine now. Now it’s pretty much on every supermarket shelf. Back when I first learned about it (we won’t mention how many years ago that was), you had to go to Europe to indulge in this amazing sweet stuff. I’m so glad that’s not the case anymore! However my waistline is not so happy about it. Must exercise self-control.
I had to make a couple of batches to get this right. Poor me, right? The first time I tried it, the crust dough was just a little bit too soft, so it does help to make sure your butter is well-chilled and to chill your tartlet shells before baking them. I made them in a mini muffin pan.
As far as the whipped cream topping goes, I thought about just going with just the Nutella filling and leaving it at that, but then remembered how well orange goes with chocolate and thought that whipped cream with just a hint or orange would give these little treats just a little something extra, plus it makes a nice presentation.
These little tartlets would be great for a brunch party because they go so well with coffee. They would be suitable for any type of party though. Or just to make and enjoy yourself. I like to keep little sweet treats around to enjoy once in a while. Since these are bite size they can’t be too bad, right? That’s what I tell myself anyhow.
